January Wrap-Up

How did your month go?  Mine turned into more of a roller-coaster than I expected, but a lot of it was very positive.

January 2013 Wrap Up list:

Done:
Pitches: 17
Keeping up with the ongoing work for Confidential Job #1, and the new assignments
they’ve added
Set up Submissions, Pitch & query Logs for 2013
Get 3 short pieces up on Smashwords
Decided to teach two short workshop in February, “The Graveyard of Abandoned Projects”, Feb. 4-6, and “Journal into Fiction” Feb. 11-14
Promotion for the workshops
Followed up unanswered pitches & submissions from September 2012
Blogged
Spent 15-30 minutes on social media every day
Taught “When Words Align”
Taught sensory perceptions
Worked with private students
Finished media kit for OLD-FASHIONED DETECTIVE WORK
Finished media kit for The Jain Lazarus Adventures
Draft of MURDER ‘SEALS’ THE DEAL

In process:
LEADING OPPORTUNITIES — less than 30K
MURDER’S INTOLERANCE — less than 30K
Twelfth Night stories still need work
Pre-release publicity for OLD-FASHIONED DETECTIVE WORK
Galaxies and Cosmology class
“That Man in Tights” — needs more work than I expected and is still in process
Ongoing work with Confidential Job #1
Work on CREATIVE FIDELITY
2013 folders
Still submitting some of the stories from the Flash 7 workshop
“Wounds” == needed more work than I thought
“New York Movie” is still in process, since I decided to send it to a different market.
Fearless Ink Brochure
Rewrite of SEVEN OF SWORDS play
Development work with Marine Life Center
I re-read the Helena Francis manuscript, but am still figuring out the next step
Ibid on TAPESTRY
Imboc story not done by end of month to my satisfaction

Put aside/dropped/released (and why):
Missed both major networking events because I was sick
Finish inputting CBC list into database — ran out of time
Choosing template & setting up blog – cancelled meetings
Development work with CWCC — goes back into effect in February
Walks 3x/week — didn’t get all of them in, often due to weather
Weight training 2X/week — just didn’t do it.
Organizing/purging boxes in basement — due to other deadlines

Unexpected additions:
Interview w/Cynthia Woolf
Twelfth Night Party (forgot I had that when I made the list)
Prepped & released the Topic Workbook SETTING UP YOUR SUBMISSION SYSTEM
Astronomy Class
Interview w/Margaret Fieland
Marketing seminar
Added some additional editing clients
Initial press & audition materials for MURDER ‘SEALS’ THE DEAL

Frustrations:
Slow-paying clients
Editors who move the publication date to get out of “paying on publication”
People who inquire about private or editing slots, but never respond once they get the information
Low-balling potential clients who try to argue my rate down to less than a living wage

Successes:
Twelfth Night Party
Release of SETTING UP YOUR SUBMISSION SYSTEM
Seal release at the NMLC (certainly not “my” success, but “our” success)
Work on the play, MURDER ‘SEALS’ THE DEAL both fun and rewarding
Agent loved wacky proposal
Got lovely compliments from an editor & an agent on some of my latest work
SEVEN OF SWORDS accepted into reading series

On Monday, I’ll post February’s To-Do List!
